Located within a depression in the Canadian Shield, the city of Saguenay has a more temperate type of weather than the nearby area. This has allowed for human settlement and agriculture to take place. The particularly small and concentrated Lac St-Jean area where the city is situated has been described as an isolated "oasis" in the middle of the distant wilderness of the vast region encompassing Northern Quebec.

Other than a few remote Inuit and Cree villages, there are no human settlements due north of Saguenay up to the Canadian Arctic islands.
